Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Shares Platform & Engine With the Fortuner, Same Power, Different Attitude

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ and Fortuner Share Same Base

The Fortuner, which is extensively localised in India, and the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ share the same base and engine options.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ and Fortuner Share Same Base: The all-new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ may appear to be a modest off-road vehicle that aims to revive the allure of its vintage predecessors, but beneath the contemporary exterior lies a well-established core. The Toyota Fortuner, one of the brand’s most popular SUVs in Asia and emerging markets, shares many of the same foundations as the FJ.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ and Fortuner Share Same Base

Toyotas tried-and-true IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) ladder frame chassis, which also supports the Hilux pickup and some Innova models, is used by both SUVs. The endurance, hauling capacity, and off-road aptitude of both vehicles are attributed to their same architecture.

The Land Cruiser FJ has a boxier form and is taller than the Fortuner, although it has smaller dimensions. The FJ is about 220 mm shorter than the Fortuner, which measures 4,795 mm in length, with dimensions of 4,575 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,960 mm in height. Additionally, the wheelbase of the Land Cruiser FJ is much shorter at 2,580 mm than that of the Fortuner, which is 2,745 mm. The FJ is 125 mm taller than the Fortuner, though, at 1,960 mm.

Another significant shared component is the 2.7-litre 2TR-FE four-cylinder petrol engine under the hood. This naturally aspirated unit in the new Land Cruiser FJ generates about 163 PS and 246 Nm of torque. Nearly identical performance is achieved by the Fortuner’s version of the same motor. They are also mechanically almost identical since they are both equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

Toyota has stated that the Land Cruiser FJ will only be offered in a few Southeast Asian and emerging regions. Both models are also produced in Thailand, which is the primary export base for cars based on the IMV platform. Because it might be placed just below the Fortuner, this creates the possibility that it will eventually arrive in nations like India.

The Land Cruiser FJ currently only has one petrol engine, but the Fortuner has more powertrain options, such as a 2.8-litre turbocharged GD diesel engine that produces 204 PS and up to 500 Nm and a mild-hybrid diesel alternative. The suspension system, which has a 4-link coil spring configuration at the back and double-wishbones up front, is also similar to that of the Fortuner.
