The Nexon and Punch, which are still at the top of the charts, supported Tata’s performance. In September, the Nexon alone sold over 22,500 units, making it India’s best-selling passenger car for the month. With a record 96% year-over-year increase, the EV range—led by the Punch EV, Nexon EV, and Tiago EV—also made a substantial contribution.

The company’s recent strong sales success in September 2025, when it reported a domestic total of 59,667 units—a 45.3% increase from 41,065 units in the same month the previous year—is the source of its confidence. Strong SUV demand and an expanding EV portfolio drove the jump, which increased Tata’s market share to 15.8%, the largest gain of any carmaker and a 4.3-point increase year over year.

On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki’s market share decreased by 5.3% this year, from 40.4% in September 2024 to 35.1% this year. Maruti suffered a decline in sales of 8.4% even though it led the market with 1,32,821 units sold. Hyundai and Toyota came in fourth and fifth place, respectively, while Mahindra maintained its third-place position with 56,233 units, up 10.1%.

Tata has a clear advantage this season thanks to the combined effects of high product demand, holiday discounts, and the beneficial effects of the GST 2.0 tax reform. In Q2 FY26, the company not only closed the gap with market leader Maruti Suzuki but also recorded its highest-ever quarterly sales.

With the holiday season in full swing, Tata Motors looks to maintain this growing momentum well into the upcoming quarter. The most notable of these new launches is the return of the Sierra nameplate.

Amit Kamat, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., spoke at the event and remarked, “This year, Dhanteras and Diwali deliveries are spread across two to three days, aligning with the auspicious mahurats. Overall demand has been very strong, and the recent GST 2.0 reform has added further positive momentum to the market. We are expecting to deliver over 25,000 vehicles during this festive period.”
