According to the chief executive of the Czech automaker’s local affiliate, Skoda’s electric vehicle targeted at India may still be two years away.
Skoda To Launch EV Car In India: Skoda now sells three electric vehicles abroad, with intentions to increase that number to five by the following year. However, the corporation doesn’t seem to be optimistic about EVs in India. According to a PTI report, Ashish Gupta, the Brand Director of Skoda’s Indian division, stated that the business is thinking of launching its first domestically produced electric vehicle between April 2027 and March 2028. By this time, the company will be able to create a local ecosystem as the nation’s charging infrastructure develops, he continued.

Global EV Testing and Showcases in India
The pre-facelift Enyaq was first tested by Skoda in India in 2022, and it was officially displayed during the 2024 Bharat Mobility Expo. A coupe variant of this car is also available globally from the firm. The Elroq was displayed by the business at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo.
Two Battery Pack Options Under Consideration
Additionally, Janeba stated that Skoda is considering two different battery pack alternatives for the EV manufactured in India. This would enable it to target consumers who are on a tighter budget or who mostly drive in urban areas, as well as those who frequently travel outside of cities or who desire the confidence of a greater range.

Volkswagen Group’s Investment and Challenges in India
According to a Reuters story from last month, the Volkswagen Group wants to increase its investments in India but is being put off by the unpredictability of policies and the fiercer competition. An extra one billion euros has been granted for the India 3.0 project, which would bring new ICE and pure electric cars, according to a June article from The Economic Times.
Design Work and Product Development in Progress
In an April interview with Business Standard, Janeba disclosed that Skoda has not yet chosen the platform for its first domestically produced EV, but it will be an Indian-only model. He went on to explain that the company has begun design work and that “product development is ongoing.” The model would be 4.5 meters long.

Early Hints from Former Brand Director Petr Janeba
A former executive of the firm may have revealed information about EVs, despite Skoda’s lack of specific plans for new locally produced vehicles beyond the current crop of MQB A0 IN platform-based trio: Kylaq, Slavia, and Kushaq. Toward the end of his term earlier this year, former Brand Director Petr Janeba gave some clues regarding the possible first Skoda EV to be built in India.
Possible Imports Ahead of Local Production
At the Bharat Mobility worldwide Expo 2025, Janeba informed Acko Drive that Skoda might import two or possibly all three of its current worldwide EVs into India by September, most likely in small quantities. As it awaits a positive result from the impending EU-India free trade agreement, the corporation seems to have put the plan on hold.
