More significantly, it is based on an entirely new EV architecture rather than an ICE platform that has been recycled. It will come with two battery packs and Honda may aim for a driving range of more than 500 kilometres per charge. India will become a key hub for production for both domestic and overseas markets.
Toshihiro Mibe, the chief executive at Honda Motor Company, presented the company’s long-term strategy in an unusually transparent manner. He emphasised that Honda is getting ready to become more actively involved in India than it has ever been. Honda views India as an essential component of its recovery strategy, alongside Japan and North America, given the rapid growth of Chinese EV competitors and the changing competitive landscape.
Honda has already created a comprehensive product strategy for the year 2030. The business plans to introduce ten new cars in India, seven of which would be SUVs in different market niches. Anticipate a new sub-Elevate small SUV, a range of hybrid options and a few foreign models, such as the Prelude, that have been slightly modified for Indian use. The core of Honda’s upcoming lineup is anticipated to include a new-generation City, a three-row midsize SUV and potentially an Elevate hybrid.
In terms of position, some may find similarities to the Elevate, although they are really superficial. The chassis layout, electronics, battery placement and other components have all been redesigned especially for battery-electric operation. Compared to the City, Amaze and Elevate that are now available, the midsize e-SUV will be a significant change.
By investing in a variety of powertrain technologies rather than relying just on EVs, Honda is obviously hedging its risks. It is no secret that Honda has lost a few chances in the early EV competition, particularly given how quickly competitors have established themselves.
