Four New MPVs To Launch In India

Maruti, Hyundai and Nissan will launch four new MPVs by 2027, targeting India’s growing family car market with hybrid, electric, and petrol options.

Four New MPVs To Launch In India: Even though SUVs are currently ruling the Indian auto industry, a sizable portion of family car customers still value MPVs. MPVs held a 10% market share in India’s automobile industry in FY2025, and demand is growing as more Indians follow the trend of leisure travel and road excursions.

After years of eyeing the sub-4 meter MPV market, Maruti Suzuki will finally enter this market in 2027. The Suzuki Solio, an A-segment Japanese MPV with dimensions akin to kei cars but a larger body and engine, will serve as the basis for the compact MPV, which is internally referred to as the “Maruti YDB.” In addition to the forthcoming series-hybrid system based on this engine, Maruti Suzuki may sell this vehicle with its new Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.

Hyundai sells three MPVs worldwide: the Stargazer, Custo/Custin, and Staria. The smallest of the three, the Stargazer, is ideal for India. Hyundai created it mainly for Southeast Asian markets as a competitor to the Ertiga. Nevertheless, the model recently got a mid-life makeover and is already three years old. Based on the same platform as the next-generation Creta, which is expected to arrive in February 2028, Hyundai may introduce the next-generation vehicle here immediately sometime in 2027.

For well over ten years, Hyundai has been considering an MPV with an emphasis on India. In 2012, the business unveiled the Hexa Space concept, a possible competitor to the Maruti Ertiga, and in 2015, it formally announced its intention to introduce the model. Due to shifting customer patterns, the corporation put plans on hold and refocused on SUVs.

Four New MPVs To Launch In India

Hyundai reiterated its intention to introduce an MPV at its inaugural investor day event in India last week. This model will be entirely different from the MPV that was originally planned. It will use Hyundai’s most recent design language and adhere to the most recent industry standards for comfort, connectivity, and safety.

The Evalia, Nissan’s first MPV in India, was much bigger and roomier than the Maruti Ertiga, but it was a failure. Now, the business intends to try MPVs once more, albeit in a lower market. With a February 2026 debut date set, it is now developing a rebranded Renault Triber and has started road testing.

With the Ertiga and XL6, Maruti Suzuki is already a player in the MPV market; in the following two years, it plans to add four more models. In order to compete with the Kia Carens Clavis EV, the Indo-Japanese joint venture is developing an electric MPV code-named “Maruti YMC.” By September of the following year, the business intends to deploy it.

Along with 49 kWh and 61 kWh LFP battery packs, the Maruti YMC should include motors that produce 142 horsepower and 172 Nm, respectively. In the top version, it could have a range of up to 475 kilometres. A corporate cousin with the Toyota logo is also planned and should show up a few months later.
